kk. we haf made an informal decision to change the scope of our paper to just sex as a taboo. and we're informally changing the title to 'a basket of fruit'. on mon we'll present our case and hopefully we can pass the bill. anw, this is our outline so far.
- sex as a taboo?
- why is it taboo?
causes embarassment to speak abt it in public
christianity says it is sin?
role of women in society to be clean and 'untainted'. but then again why is sex considered as corruption? abit circular.
other points for this topic include original sin, which is why women are considered as temptation in certain societies. also note tt emperors in ancient china had entire harems to do it with but they never spoke about it. even tho it was more or less common knowledge tt the emperor had a whole harem to himself. and ancient greeks too. they had (according to cheryl) weekly orgies and stuff like that. on the other hand, muslims are so conservative about this tt they dont even let their women show their arms or legs.
that was quite historical. so we go on to the 'now'. why is it still taboo now?
- children being influenced by parents.
- government says it is bad? (note tt they encourage babies but they never say 'have more sex', and the rating of movies due to content related to our topic.)
- rape? since it is considered a crime, maybe it influences society's view towards normal copulation.
it is also of note tt emile mentioned tt the chinese word for sex had a negative connotation.
a weird question tt appeared on my notes is also 'why is premarital sex so bad'. after abit of thought.. i found it abit irrelevant. but still i'll put it here.
- stds
- underage single parents
( mother drops out of school to take care of the baby => lower educatio level?)
then we have the 'why is it not so taboo now?'
- in the 1960s some book by scientists on sex caused a widespread opening up of people's mindsets.
- western influence? cos they say tt they are a free country. so ppl twist that ideology to fit their activities. which mite be stuff like having sex without caring abt anything else?
- rebellious years. i'm nt so sure abt this. cant really rmb. haha
now we haf sexual deviants. which are considered as super taboo since its like. sex not the normal way. like necrophilia, which is sex with dead bodies. yuck. and corprophilia, getting turned on by shit. i dunno. sounds really wrong to me. and another pt of ntoe was tt hitler was once like that, according to my hist teacher.
then we haf sexuality. why are homos so outcast? why is their behaviour considered taboo?
- social norms.
- intolerance in society
so its sorta like 'ur different, ur wrong?' a story was told tt in the *prehistoric* past, people of similar traits banded together, and those tt were different were outcasted. maye this behaviour still lives on inside us.
=> 'normal' people tink they're superior and they then judge others.
another pt was brought up tt its easier to condemn smt tt we do not do ourself.
another is also tt if two parties haf equally justified arguments, then the majority wins?
yups. i guess tts abt it for now. research has to be done tho. so i'd appreciate if people came up and did research on the following:
-sexual deviants.
(and hitler)
- why stuff became less taboo now.
- reasons for society disregarding homos.
more than one person can do each topic, so dun be afraid to do too much research. x) we'll talk again on monday. tmr. yeah. haha
