What is a taboo?
A taboo is a strong social prohibition (or ban) relating to any area of human activity or social custom declared as sacred and forbidden; breaking of the taboo is usually considered objectionable or abhorrent by society.
When an activity or custom is classified as taboo it is forbidden and interdictions are implemented concerning it. Some taboo activities or customs are prohibited under law and transgressions may lead to severe penalties. Other taboos result in embarrassment, shame, and rudeness.
Umm... from this definition, it appears that taboo knowledge is not knowledge that is forbidden, but knowledge of activities and customs that are forbidden.
But even if we go by our own definition, is there really knowledge that we're forbidden to acquire? For instance, religious knowledge. We're not forbidden to learn about religions, are we? We're just forbidden to show disrespect to these religions. It's not the same, right? And umm... s**. We're not banned from learning about it, are we? Especially since schools give their students talks about it every year. We're just banned from discussing it publicly or surfing porn. So... the knowledge itself isn't taboo, as long as you acquire it through the proper means?
Which leaves us with only the government. But does society object to the acquisition of knowledge that the government has forbidden us to learn of? If society doesn't, then it doesn't fit the criteria for taboo knowledge.
Just in case someone comes up with a counter to my argument:
Why is certain knowledge taboo?
Sources of taboo knowledge: If taboo knowledge is taboo, then how do we come to learn of it?
How does making certain knowledge taboo affect society?
Is it moral to make knowledge taboo?
